Why Giving Back is Good For Everyone

Whether large or small, acts of kindness can have a huge ripple effect that touches the person giving, the one receiving, and the community at large. Even the smallest gesture can have a strong, positive influence. Simply put, giving back is good for everyone.

Why Giving Back is Good For Everyone

You might choose to volunteer in a neighborhood near or far, give back to your local project management community, donate to a charity you're passionate about, or even seize opportunities to practice random acts of kindness.

No matter how you choose to give back, don't doubt the benefits to yourself and those you help.

Get a happiness boost

When you help others, it's not unusual to feel happy and good about yourself. This may not be the reason you help others, but it is a nice side effect. In fact, altruistic volunteers tend to stave off depression and live longer.

“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” — Aesop

Make a difference

When you choose projects and causes that resonate with you, even one small gesture can have a big impact on others. Imagine the satisfaction you'll feel knowing that you can be a force for greater good in your corner of the world -- that you actually made a difference in the lives of others.

“Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” — Mark Twain

Inspire others

The people you help and even people who simply want to "get involved" may be inspired by your actions and find ways to pay it forward. This can have a cyclical effect that can ultimately strengthen communities.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” — Margaret Mead

Foster feelings of gratitude

Giving back can help you realize the many good things about your own life. And, it seems that the more aware and grateful you are, you're probably more likely to share, donate, volunteer, and help others. A recent study found that gratitude "encourages us to return favors to our friends, neighbors and family members. And gratitude inspires us to help others in society as a whole."

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” — Leo Buscaglia
