Lean Process Improvement

Learn how CDOT strives to become recognized as “The best DOT in the country” for all customers by focusing on our people, leading-edge technology, and a healthy multi-modal system. 

  • Technology Peak. Celebrating CDOT Successes. This is a series piece, focusing on recognizing and celebrating some of the more prominent successful projects under the 3 Peaks of CDOT.  Gary will share details of improvements related to their initiatives such as their Weather Savvy Roads and Unmanned Aerial Systems projects.
  • People Peak. Learn about CDOT values regarding People, Respect and Excellence.  People Peak aims to “grow and develop CDOT team members so that everyone loves to come to work and others want to work for the best organization in Colorado and the country.  Hear about projects like the CDOT Maintenance Compensation and Housing Project and Employee Recognition Program.
  • System Peak. Discussion of how CDOT fulfills their mission: “to provide the best multi-modal transportation system for Colorado that most effectively and safely moves people, goods, and information.”  Hear how CDOT “Healthy Multi-modal System” Peak was successful projects such as Pathfinder to effectively improve CDOT’s readiness for intense winter events and their Budget Model Enhancements initiative.

Presenter: Gary Vansuch | Lean | Six Sigma | Change Management; Director of the Office of Process Improvement, Colorado Department of Transportation

Gary Vansuch is Director of Process Improvement for the Colorado Department of Transportation (also known as "CDOT"). He directs efforts to improve the organization's operations, focused on making government more effective, efficient and elegant. He has over 30 years of business improvement and change leadership experience in the energy, financial services, research and government services sectors. Gary is a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt and a Certified Change Management Practitioner. Additionally, Gary served six years with the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award program, including four years as a Senior Examiner and as a member of the national Case Study Development Team. He has also been a Judge for the International Team Excellence Awards, and a Judge for the RIT / USA Quality Cup competition for improvement teams.

CDOT's process improvement initiative has received national recognition, including designation as a "Bright Idea in Government" from the Innovations in American Government Awards program, which is administered by the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University; and, as a winner of the 2017 North American Employee Engagement Award.
