Topic. The Current State of DevOps

Synopsis of Session. DevOps has become a hot topic in IT circles. It is a culture and set of processes that bring development and operations teams together to complete software development.  It allows organizations to create and improve products at a faster pace than they can with traditional software development approaches. Adoption has been accelerating each year as companies realize the need to deliver systems faster and be more responsive to changing markets. The presentation provides many resources for follow up and discussion.

Objectives: This session will:

• Introduce PMs to the core DevOps principles,
• Review industry adoption and struggles,
• Discuss trends, and
• Discuss in demand DevOps skills.

Speaker.  Bill Masters, BA/MS; Senior Engineer, Broadcom; Faculty and CCIS IT Department Industry Advisory Board, Anderson College of Business and Computing Regis University

About the Speaker. Bill Masters is an experienced IT professional and educator. He has worked as a technical lead and principal software engineer with many large companies such as Broadcom, Lumen/CenturyLink/Qwest/US West, Dish/Sling, TWC/Charter, Cable Labs, Oracle/Sun/STK. He has led DevOps efforts to automate development pipelines and deployments using home grown scripting, Jenkins, Terraform, and Gitlab. Bill has led projects to implement system monitoring using Splunk and AppDynamics. Bill is currently excited to develop Ansible and Ansible Tower scripts to automate provisioning of Google Cloud VMs as test and development environments and automating other operations processes.

Bill has supported Regis University for more than 20 years as an Affiliate Faculty and industry advisor. He developed curriculum in areas such as DevOps, IT Technology Concepts, Java architectures, and security to educate future IT Leaders. Bill is the creator of the Introduction to DevOps and Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery courses at Regis.

Bill Masters holds a BA in Applied Mathematics from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo and a Master of Engineering in Engineering Management from the University of Colorado Boulder. Bill recently completed “Inspired” product development training and “SAFE (Scaled Agile). Bill is a MS student at Regis in Software Engineering.
