Title: Bridging Lean Management Theory to PM Practice and Career Growth
Summary: This session introduces the core principles and models of Lean Management theory and demonstrates its applicability to project and program management. We will explore the overlap between Lean Management and Project Management methodologies and will discuss opportunities where PMs can leverage Lean for career advancement, including identifying meaningful training opportunities and certifications that can provide a distinct professional advantage.
Objectives:
- Understand Lean and Lean Management principles and frameworks
- Identify overlap between Lean Management and Project Management methodologies
- Define the value proposition of specific Lean/Six Sigma certifications and the PM career path

John Newton is a highly respected Lean practitioner and enterprise transformation leader with over 15 years of experience orchestrating complex change across the healthcare, financial, energy, and government sectors. He is a Principal Consultant with Lean Methods Group, and a member of the Colorado Lean Network board of directors.
With deep expertise in blending Lean, Project Management, and Change Management principles, John specializes in helping organizations implement Lean Management Systems to guide organizational excellence and strategy deployment capabilities. He is proficient in strategy development and deployment (e.g., Hoshin Kanri) and in guiding organizations to translate top-level strategy into tangible value streams and tactical execution.
His unique perspective to this discussion is to explore how Project Managers can leverage Lean training and certifications as a critical enabler to project management processes and a pathway for career advancement.
